Clonidine for Sedation of Paediatric Patients in the Intensive Care Unit (CloSed)

The EU-funded CloSed project is an international cooperation, comprising 10 European partners. The Paediatric Clinical Study Center (head: Assoc. Prof. Antje Neubert) of the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, Department for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine acts as coordinator of this huge project. Moreover, the Center for Clinical Studies (CCS, head: Dr. Bernd Gebhardt) and the University Hospital Pharmacy (head: Prof. Dr. Frank Dörje, MBA) significantly contribute to the CloSed project.

Aim of the project is to investigate the use of clonidine as sedative drug on paediatric intensive care units (PICU). Despite a lack of evidence regarding its safety and efficacy in young patients (0-18 years of age), clonidine (commonly known as hypotensive drug) is widely used for sedation of children in need of intensive care. Furthermore, there is by now no age-appropriate formulation and dosage form available. In consequence, the use of clonidine on PICU is still called “off-label use”. The CloSed project aims to provide the missing evidence and establish clonidine as authorized drug for children in need of intensive care.
